Contactless Comes to China

Basically the most popular payment platform here for purchases that aren’t like, buying some tea etc is trying to capture that half of the low volume spending too.

To do this they want to reduce friction, so now you can tap their terminals with your phone: even on iPhone.

On iPhone it will use a mini applet (don’t remember their actual name) that was announced a while back but no one decided to use

On Android it’ll just trigger the app directly.

On iPhone it’s a little slow, but still quicker than opening your app to scan your phone IMO

Worth mentioning that this is cool because actually it means foreigners can now use non-QR contactless payments within China as well as locals who have had options like FacePay/HandPay before.

I saw these were being piloted online a while back but recently I’ve seen them popping up in stores very quickly!

Google Pay is getting more annoying in the UK with many transactions now needing biometric or pin based verification.

Probably best sticking with the QR code payments (for low value transactions) in the land of the Dragon :dragon_face:
