Nationwide accounts

Letter was offering me the £200 switch bonus and QR code takes you too nationwide

Ah I see. Yeah, I’d probably just start from Nationwide dot co dot uk, as much because it’d be easier than faffing about with a QR code as anything else.

3 days to go before offer is pulled and I still cannot decide

Go for it. Free money is always a plus.

If it is the choice between Metro and Nationwide, I’d say Nationwide were far less likely to implode spectacularly; the savings interest rates and overall package aren’t bad, but the app is a little dated.

I’m quite happy with them as an institution though.

You get fairer share payments with Nationwide. They also have better packaged accounts if your needs ever change. I’d also argue the app is better with Nationwide but that’s opinion based.

Had an old savings account so just opened a flex direct to switch from barclays for the £200

1 day to go and still sitting on the fence :rage:

Sit this one out. There will be others (hopefully). Keep the Metro account going, for now at least.

Get a Chase account, set up a few additional current accounts with some “free” direct debits on each (PayPal on each, then get a Moneybox simple saver on one of those, Plum on another - there are other savings accounts which will get you more free DDs with a bit more admin).

Next time around, switch one of these ‘burners’ (making sure there’s enough DDs on each to satisfy the switch conditions). If you do this for every offer that comes up by the end of the year you’ll probably* earn £1000 by Christmas - easy money. You’ll also get good hands-on exposure, so you can make an informed choice about where you want your main banking to be. Then finally if you decide you like Nationwide, ask them to switch in your Metro Bank account.

*based on previous years, no guarantee!

I tend to think switching your main banking relationship without first-hand knowledge of who you’re switching to for an incentive is a recipe to have a bad time.

Just finished the switch process tonight all done and dusted.

I already have the following accounts. Starling not used much. Monzo mostly used for saving pots. Chase day to day spending for 1% cashback. Plus my Metrobank for direct debits and salary.

My daughter had a nationwide account and the local nationwide in our town are very helpful whenever I’ve been in there over the years.

Does anyone how long after switch you be notified that you qualified and get payment from nationwide?

Within 10 days according to the terms. Usually comfortably within that tho.

Metro’s accounts would just been taken over by another bank/ Building Society if it was going bust.
As long as you’re within the FSCS limits; nothing to worry about.

My wife and I have had 3 switching bonuses payout this month (one each for new sole FlexAccounts and another for our existing joint FlexPlus).

That’s £800 they’ve paid us in June and July. Not bad at all!

Also just spotted this on the website - I know we have some fans of financial institution branded stationary reading:

I’ve never seen one of those passbooks, looks quite nice!

It’s not a passbook, it’s a “Savings Wallet”, which apparently will hold your savings cashcard and ministatements (presumably ones which they’ll print for you on demand from a counter in a bank, thereby partially replicating the ‘making up passbook’ procedure).

They’re going to be introduced at the end of the month ahead of passbooks being retired altogether next year.

I agree though, it’s cute. I remember when I set up my first Natwest bank account 23 years ago they sent a binder for statements, a hard cover for the paying in book and a little card wallet. I think that was the tail end of that sort of thing though, as by the time I set up my student and adult bank accounts 6 or 7 years later it was very much a ‘here’s your debit card, here’s your PIN, here’s some leaflets, off you go’ situation. I seem to recall Alliance & Leicester sent a nice account manual.

Ooh, it’s all flooding back now. Getting my Midland Bank Livecash account whilst in year 7 of high school. Midland bank would come to the school once a week so we could pay money into our accounts. Getting your first bank account was pretty exciting back then. :joy:

Had the same from NatWest in mid 1980s. Kept those statements until mass clearout 2001. To this day I could not say why
