This conversation was started on Friday - more than 24 hours before the Monzo community forum was placed in suspended animation by the moderators over there. It was inevitable that action would be discussed in this thread: it’s just coincidence, albeit timely.
We will, we will, block you.
I personally have a suspicion we’re not going to see the forum in the light of day again anyway.
That’s a good point – it’s not been reopened yet, and I’d put money on there being internal discussions at Monzo about the future of the forum
If there isn’t, something is wrong.
I think you might be underestimating some of the ego’s that manage it
There has to be a management meeting about it. Wonder if TS will just decide it’s too much hassle, I wonder if he has any interest it
Standby Mods. for influx to here. R-
If he’s anything like Anne (as a seasoned banker I think they’re more alike than some would like to think), the forum will go the way of the dodo
I think one of the discussions Monzo should be having, is whether the Monzo forum, is a Public Relations success.
There’s probably some unpopular opinions in this post but oh well, I’ll post it anyway.
I’m going to assume there was some backlash towards Cooky as his socials have now gone private, twin that with the bashing they all seemed to have received on here so far, I wouldn’t really be surprised.
I for one will miss it if it goes and I personally feel for the mods that have been slammed in this thread(there’s some real hypocrisy in places). Whilst we might not hear from staff a lot on the Monzo forum anymore, it was great to get insights on what’s being worked on, or just for some staff to pop in, drop a knowledge bomb and leave again. It will be sad to lose it all over an article that a few people that are on both forums are hyping up to be devastating to Monzo, It’s ridiculous, there’s been much worse written and said about Monzo than this one article yet they’re apparently trying to shut it down.
People give their time to forums like this and Monzo’s to moderate for free, they may always not get it right but at least they try and a lot of the time, they’re needed, whilst yes I agree some threads don’t need to be shut down so quickly, a lot of threads would have descended into chaos should they not have got closed. I’d imagine they’ve all probably read this thread so wouldn’t be surprised if they quit if Monzo do decide to reopen the forums, I know i would,
It is unacceptable if he (or anyone else on the forum) received abuse or unwanted contact due to their actions. At the same time, I think there is (was?) a tendency to shut down undesirable conversations for no good reason.
Allowing a civil discussion on moderation policies would allow people to air their grievances. Putting a lid on it will just cause things to overboil and result in last weekend’s events.
I would also miss the Monzo forum as I found out a lot about other fintechs and banks there – less so about Monzo. I’m just curious what they would do without the forum’s free first line support
That’s the real question right there
move to reddit?
Or of course, someone with the relevant ability to do so, set up an unofficial Monzo forum.
A few things I’d like to touch upon here.
- As someone who was there when everything went down, that thread, and any backlash from it on here had nothing to do with the forum being placed in slow mode. There was hours of consistent and fast paced trolling and spam, including impersonation of monzobot.
- Backlash is justified in this case I think. The link to the article had been quietly and quickly removed several times before a discussion could take place. When it did take place, it was a level headed and respectful discussion and had lost its steam anyway, so why close it! The reason quoted for locking was an out and out lie, unless the trolls targeted that thread too.
- The trolling was absolutely not justified though. It was a very bad night and I feel for the mods who had to deal with it. Likewise if any mod or staff member received any abuse. None of that is a reasonable reaction if you don’t like the way moderators are doing things.
This. I can’t stress this enough. I’ve raised exactly this point with cookywook not too long ago, and he addressed those things head on, privately, with me. And it was a damn good response. Addressed the issues, accepted accountability, and shared hope for things to improve in the future. I still hope he’ll share those things publicly, because I think they’d go a long way to healing the landscape.
I too will miss the Monzo Forum very much if it closes.
Not particularly, just sharing my opinion on the situation as a whole.
Everybody else has shared and just because I this instance it’s not anti Monzo like the majority here doesn’t mean I can’t post it.
I hope that’s not a hint
I think you have enough on your plate Mathew, you have in my opinion, done a great job here.
I didn’t say that they are, but my opinion of this thread as a hole after sporadic reading over the weekend was slightly, and given there’s post that say let’s not make this a Monzo bashing, my opinion is perfectly justified.
And plus because I can have conversations with “Anti-Monzo” people, just because I Like Monzo as a whole doesn’t mean I think they’re perfect, I think they’re far from it. I have always been quick to point out anything I think they do wrong or issues I have with them.
Monzo aren’t the only go tech I use, I just use to talk about the others in a place that’s now not available.
I don’t really understand why you’re so bothered by me sharing my opinion. I’m sorry if I’ve offended you.
If I’m not welcome then I’ll genuinely leave
