I’ve been using Google Pay to pay for things with my phone for many years without issue. I last successfully used it two days ago. Yesterday, I tried to make a payment in a shop and it failed. My phone displayed a message saying my device didn’t meet security requirements, and it may be because it’s rooted or running a modified OS.
My phone is a Pixel 8 Pro running the latest version of stock Android. The Google Pay app is up to date, and all available OS security updates are installed. It hasn’t been modified in any way.
I’ve had a look online and found a number of posts from other people reporting the same issue over the past year, but there don’t appear to be any solutions. Even when contacting Google Support, it sounds like people are being fobbed off. Has anyone else come across a similar issue? I use Google Pay all the time and will be gutted if I can’t resolve the issue.
Not the same thing but Google has recently made Google pay much less user friendly.
You now need to authenticate each time you want to make a payment (apart from public transport) when you didn’t before. This is regardless of how recently you last verified your identity and/or if it is still unlocked
This means that every time I make a payment the first time fails, I am then asked for my fingerprint and try again
Just to update, it appears to be working today. So, two days of being told my phone doesn’t meet security requirements, then it works fine again despite no changes
That hardly ever happens to me. Usually, when I am about to pay, my phone is locked, I use the fingerprint reader to unlock, hold near contactless payment device and it works.
Does it make a difference if the phone has been unlocked for sometime before making payment?
Previously being unlocked made a fairly difference - it seems less so now
I have noticed that the card terminals seem now know that the authentication is being asked for and it’s not being declined/some kind of tech failure. Probably something updated on the Google Wallet side.
