Savings accounts recommendations

I was confusing it with one of their other savings accounts. Looks like you don’t need a current account for this one.

Bye, Zopa

It’s a bummer for these small players when a big bank flexes it’s muscles. It’s rare, but can’t be ignored, can it?

Nope :+1:

Just takes longer to set up as you need to wait for online access, from what I have read over at MSE forum.

You don’t need a Santander current account to sign up with them?

Applied and account opened pretty much as soon as I submitted the application. I’ve got the sort code and account number but need to wait for the letters for online access.

Now do I dare transfer a chunk before I get access…

I can’t transfer much before the weekend, anyway, because that’s when my longer term Zopa pots become available.

That’s the same as others have reported :grinning:

Just opened up an account too. Transferred a not too shabby amount into the new account. Just have to wait for the letters to arrive. I’ll then empty my savings out of Chase. I’ve chosen the monthly interest option.

Emptied my Chase savings account and shuffled it over to Santander. Transaction blocked and have to call Chase. Over an hour hold time so I gave up and will try again tomorrow.

Expect the same when you try to move it out of Santander in next month or two :joy:

Yes, this is my only real concern about Santander. I do tend to shift quite large amounts every few months.

Received the two letters this morning with the online/mobile/telephone banking codes. The codes are covered with the silver stuff that has to be scratched away leaving bits everywhere. Haven’t seen that for a while.

Yes, same here and my thoughts exactly the same as yours regarding the scratch off silver stuff.

Anyway, now have full access to the account and I can see the deposit I made when I opened the account. All good :slightly_smiling_face:

Just transferred a much larger amount from Zopa → Monzo → Santander.

Zopa → Monzo around 20 minutes; Monzo → Santander instantaneous.

Same here, just made a transfer from Starling to Santander, instantaneous.

I’m going to leave it until the end of the month before I start making transfers out of Chase to Santander, but even then, that will be bit by bit via Starling.

No longer a recommendation for NEW customers.

Santander eSaver Limited Edition has sold out at 2.75% and now shows a new rate, Issue 2.

Just in time, then :relieved:

Yep.

With that and the Barclays Rainy Day Saver, my emergency fund is covered, and easily accessible.

Meanwhile, my investments go in the opposite direction.

MINUS 4.32% so far, on a five figure sum.

At this rate, unless there is a dramatic turn in the market over the next decade (when I may then need access), it is possible a savings account may have outstripped them :astonished:

Surely not though. Plenty of posters chunt on about how savings are a waste of money and you can only really fight inflation with investments

I wonder if this forum will still be going in a decade, to reflect on

Tesco have increased their Instant Saver to 2.06% AER, comprising of a variable 0.35% and a fixed 12-month bonus of 1.71%

Still not up there with the most competitive, and of course has the annoying trait of having to open a new account to get the latest rate, every time they change the bonus.

I have a 1.81% one that collects my Halifax Reward £5s and only those deposits. Not worth updating for the pennies involved. I not that desperate for cash.

Edit: Forum has warned me that I have contributed over 20% of the posts on this thread and would I like to hear from anyone else

Yes, both equities and bonds have suffered for a while now. Over a longer term (at least 5 years) then it’s likely that they will beat inflation, so I continue to hang on to mine. I’ve added a small amount of gold to my portfolio (10%, via the RMAP ETF) for good measure. That tends to do well in otherwise hard times.

Lloyds monthly saver 4.5% or 5.25 if you have club Lloyds
