So, there’s actually some wild lore to this. A gourd in Chinese is called 葫芦 (Hulu) which sounds like 福禄 (fulu) which is like happiness and prosperity
The gourd also looks like the number 8 which is lucky in Chinese culture (because the number 8 in Chinese is written 八 and this indicates prosperity due to the wide opening iirc)
