If Starlings is a “real” Euro account, why would it have exactly the same IBAN as the sterling account?

Bunq may have let any people order a Maestro card, but never on the free tier.

I think you’re right, they heavily limited the cards allowed on their free plans.

It has a unique IBAN, but it is a GB one. This is still a “real” SEPA-supporting IBAN even though it has a GB country-code.

I am aware a few high street banks offer Euro denominated accounts, usually attracting a hefty fee

HSBC and Barclays offer accounts which are basically free if you aren’t converting in and out of Euros with them. It’s best to do the conversion through Revolut or Wise.

SEPA payments in and out don’t cost anything and you can park money in there for free.
