I have that picture disc too
I have 700-800 records which I have been slowly disposing of (not the easiest of goods to sell and send safely).
I still have a turntable (never actually got rid of mine) but rarely play vinyl. Yes, the sound is almost certainly better than CDs (and CDs are much better than MP3s and most streaming sites) but taking portability and resilience into consideration, digital media it is.
And I’m sure that’s a serious motivating factor to get back into the whole vinyl thing.
But I wonder (now you’ve opened the door ) how “better” is measured.
Some might say that digitising music automatically cleans up audio. It certainly doesn’t result in pops and crackles (or snaps ?) as vinyl does over time.
Others will claim that sanitised audio is a travesty.
What is certainly true is that storing and playing (and selling) vinyl is far more obstacle-ridden than is digital media.
The obvious up-side is that, without vinyl, that’s a whole avenue of expenditure denied (some of) us.
Just saying…….
There’s some folk who reckon they can hear the difference between a digital and a purely analogue version of a track. Of course since the 80s the vast majority of music has not even existed in a purely analogue format… and yet people reckon there’s a difference to be heard.
There’s also folk who reckon they can hear frequencies beyond the ranges humanly possible…
This is the crux of the matter, really.
For me, I prefer the sound of vinyl, but happily forgo that for the convenience of streaming. The audio quality of streaming is more than good enough for my old ears, and being able to listen to tracks anywhere, in any order, at the drop of a hat, far outweighs the advantages of vinyl.
Yeah, this is me too.
Yesterday I upgraded to Spotify Premium for £9.99 for 3 months so that I can listen to album tracks in the order they were intended, and without ads.
So much more pleasant experience now
Currently listening to Nottingham band, As December Falls
I’d never heard of this band - I have now. And courtesy of Apple Music, I’ve got that album.
Thanks @Breezy
Well, well well!
So the brand new Audio Technica deck arrived today and I’m smiling from ear to ear😁
The deck itself is very good looking. The whole setup procedure was a breeze using the YouTube video as guidance. I bought an upgraded stylus and swapped out the factory fit one.
I lowered my Dire Straits LP on the platter and synced the on deck Bluetooth with my Marantz AV and my jaw just dropped. I actually felt a little bit emotional, the sound is just awesome! Even my Wife is impressed that a vinyl LP that hasn’t seen a platter in over 20+ years, could sound so wonderful.
Anyway, 3 LPs on their way from HMV and a few more to follow me thinks
Good work, sir.
To be honest, I honestly can’t tell the difference between CDs, 320 kbps MP3s or Spotify. Nor do I have the Quad system required to hear such a difference. I just enjoy the music. Maybe I just have cloth ears
