I’ve had my fair share of those ![]()
That starting word man. I think it eliminated the vast majority of words straight away. There weren’t many I could think of for my second guess, and after that second guess I could really only piece together one word.

Dang!
Soare. It’s a very effective starting word for eliminating the pool of potential words.
Do explain….![]()
Might be something to do with making a word from the 9 most commonly used letters in the alphabet. Concise Oxford Dictionary [9th edition 1995] R-
I should have fathomed that meself ![]()
I remember as a kid going to the local library (sadly now closed during the post-crash austrity years), and finding a book on codes and ciphers. It explained, for a simple substitution code, you can use the relative frequency of letters used in English to help crack it. It gave the order as ETAONISRDH… Now when I started doing wordle some years back, I thought about what a good starting word might be. I settled on NEATS, which seemed to work quite well. I still use it today, but SOARE also a good option.
It’s all in the information theory link I shared near the top of the thread.
Edit: just occurred to me I only ever summarised it. Never share the research. That’s here:
As it turns out, the word “soare” (an obsolete term for a young hawk) performs best, with an expected value of 5.89 bits. This means that if you start with this word, the space of possible solution words shrinks to an average of 2–5.89, or 1.7 percent of the possibilities. So on average, about 22 solution words are still possible.
So just from your first guess, on average you’ve narrowed it down to 22 potential solutions. A fraction of what you’re left with if you use Adieu for instance. A good second guess will narrow that down to a couple. And that’s how I end up getting in 3 or less more often than not.
