Back to Chase…

I remember the ‘trick’ of using Paypal to get cashback with Amex many moons ago, I tried this with Chase when buying something from Apple with my linked card in Paypal and it actually shows in my Current Account as an Apple Store purchase with no mention of Paypal at all. Now I haven’t lost anything here as Apple qualify for cashback but if I were trying to be sneaky and pay for something like a bill that don’t usually get cashback this wouldn’t have worked at all.

What was I doing wrong, should I have transferred to the PayPal balance instead and paid that way? Does this even work in Chase like it used to Amex?

PayPal and Chase have a very tight integration. But even if they didn’t, PayPal is a money service so wouldn’t qualify for cashback.

But it did/does with Amex?

Not if you use Friends and Family payments, it doesn’t.

Every lender manages their exceptions differently, you can’t make any assumptions that a certain MCC will be universally OK or not OK.

Both should have their own lists somewhere to tell you which ones won’t be eligible for cashback though, so you can make an informed decision.

Chase’s is here:

Merchants should disclose MCCs by default though tbh

How/where? In a physical retail setting that isn’t going to work.

On websites, the payment processor should let you know

In person, slap a sticker on the card machine

And the customer is expected to know about these arbitrary codes and crosscheck them each time with their financial products?

Well certainly not this customer. :flushed::slightly_smiling_face:

Yes, anyone with a card paying benefits should know and ask their financial services provider for a list

Or even better, they could let you type the MCC into their app; regardless, requires both parties to act

Ludicrous suggestion.

Perhaps one to agree to disagree on :raised_hand:

My Roundups pot gets reset on Thursday, with the balance being transferred to my DD paying savings account.

Don’t see any point in switching the feature back on though. Although only a gimmick anyway, 5% is no longer the draw it once was.

Anyone else still using roundups?

Yep, and I’ll continue using it once it resets.

The rate isn’t very attractive anymore, but I just love the loop of spend > round > cashback. It feels very good, and I think turning the roundup off wouldn’t feel as good.

The rate is still better than the savers, and it’s still instant access, so might as well make the most of it for that little bit extra.

I turned them off after about a month, felt like a gimmick slowly eating away at my available balance. Which is usually only around £100 as the rest is sitting in one of the savings accounts until needed.

Me, got a solid 130 of my own money in roundups and it makes for not difficult saving. You can withdraw it any time too so… what’s the point of not doing it
