Nostalgia, or "Do you remember when....?"

Oh, the fun you could have with those neighbours of yours…:face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Don’t forget the old shilling and two shilling coins, which survived as the 5p and 10p until the early 90s! I remember as a young ‘un being fascinated by all these old coins featuring long-dead kings in my pocket.

Some people were very resistant to “new money”, as the BBC archive shows!

Really it’s just the principle that people never like change of any kind, and we did see a similar initial backlash against polymer notes when the new £5 first came out. I suppose that’s the equivalent of today - the end of paper money.

Also note the “will the elderly be able to cope” undercurrent to much of the coverage, which pervades today in the context of discussions about a potential cashless society. Some things never change!

I did have to laugh recently when the local bus company proposed replacing cash with a smartcard to speed journeys up - the backlash was immense. One of the amusing quotes was “PENSIONERS WON’T BE ABLE TO COPE”, obviously oblivious to the fact that pensioners have been using smartcard technology for some time now in the shape of their travel pass.

We have the closure of Post Office accounts in November 2021 to get through next.

Indeed, although they have been trying to move people off them for ages already so the date could be extended.
