Royal Bank of Scotland accounts

This has become a really good resource. May have to create a separate thread for all the Child & Co materials?

Learned a lot today.

I do think the Child & Co stuff being discussed likely warrants its own thread given that it’s not real private banking, but rather just the skin of one.

ETA might be worth creating a step by step guide for acquiring one using the resources from this thread in all honesty. It’d be something of a unique resource as one does not seem to exist elsewhere on the internet, and folks who pop up on MSE looking for these threads often want to know how exactly you get one and don’t usually find the answer.

True, I would think of it as banking with a private bank, but not private banking - if that makes any sense at all!

Maybe it’s better not to have it’s own thread through, to fly more under the radar?!

Search Engine Optimisation must be affected by these sorts of things, and it would be a shame if “the door was closed” because RBS became concerned that the open secret was becoming too widely known.

I imagine you’re right!

I did create a guide for opening one but saved it as a draft. If folk feel it’s worth posting, either as a separate thread in which to merge this discussion into, or as an additional post here, then I will do.

There should already be enough information here for folk to piece together out how to open one themselves though, whilst being obscure and buried enough to hopefully avoid detection and having the thing shut down.

Sounds like a silly question but if RBS and Natwest are on the same system wouldnt you technically use the same log in details or are they different? (Asking as if you was to have an account with both at the same time)

Not sure if anyone knows, but does this work for joint accounts too? Would a joint account come with two C&C cards? @Seb

In this competitive market, I wonder if RBS would be anything other than pleasantly surprised at the attention.

For peace of mind, I’ll consult with the other mods…

They use different logins and also have separate banking licences

The form that @anon62610374 linked to allows you to select joint account at application stage.

It’s just like any other RBS joint account, so you would each get a card (and both would be Child & Co, I imagine). I haven’t tried it myself though, so your experience may differ from that.

As for the “difference” between RBS and NatWest, they are sister brands. The products at both are effectively identical, but the two banks are legally separate (even though they are ultimately owned by the same group).

This means that any accounts on the RBS side of the business are treated separately to NatWest - you need to login to the relevant app, etc, to see your products with each.

There is nothing stopping you from being a customer of both if you want to be.

I’m going to see if I get a Child & Co card now I have applied. I imagine we are all going to spark a massive banwave for sneaking into the private bank system lol

I don’t know - people have been doing it for 10 years already.

Hopefully not anyway!

Out of curiosity, does it matter which branch you select when applying?

An influx of customers on a Sunday using an old form may raise some eyebrows! However small we may be!

I hope it doesn’t close the loophole, and I’d imagine MSE will have created larger surges of new accounts back in the day anyway, and it still exists.

If you want one of the special C&Co cards then you need to choose that specific branch. Besides that, it won’t much matter. With the new form it apparently just assigns one at random anyway.

Damn, I think I’ve c**ked up then lol
I only applied for the fancy card :joy:

Not sure if you can fix that! :grimacing: @Seb seems to be our resident expert on this, so hopefully he knows!

It might be possible to open a second account with a different sort code later, as @Seb has one with Drummonds sort code too.

Definitely don’t want an RBS or Nat West card
I dumped them years ago :joy:

Question for anyone that can answer. Is Child & Co still FSCS protected

For the C&Co account you get signing up with this method, it will be covered under RBS, as they are FSCS protected. The protections will cover all your accounts under the RBS umbrella though. So a max of £85k across all brands, not for each separately,

Yes, this is true, but NatWest has a separately banking license (so £85,000 at NatWest including Ulster Bank NI and another £85,000 allowance at RBS - including Child & Co, Drummonds and Holts).
