Royal Bank of Scotland accounts

Yes, use the application form @N26throwaway linked to and you will get to choose a branch as usual. At the choose a branch part, though, you must make sure to choose the relevant sort code!

I believe this works even as an existing customer, it will just appear as a new account on your online banking after a couple of days.

You could previously apply through online banking as an existing customer but I don’t think this reliably lets you pick the sort code any more, I think it just allocates the same one as your existing accounts automatically. It used to ask you.

You could try a bit of trial and error?

All of the accounts being referenced always were, and still are, under the RBS “umbrella”.

The change in group name has not affected that, in fact it has affected very little in terms of day to day branding.

Both Child & Co and Holt’s Military Banking ultimately arrived under RBS ownership via Glyn, Mills & Co (later Williams & Glyn’s Bank) - see the history here.

Drummonds was directly purchased by RBS in the 1920s to give it a better foothold in London.

I don’t believe NatWest Group has come up in conversation yet? But yes the name has changed.

NatWest and RBS though still come under their own banking license and subsidiaries

What’s the interest in Child & Co? Is it just for the card and novelty?

Yes!
Frankly, if you find it uninteresting you’ve ended up in the wrong thread (I don’t mean to be rude, but there we are).

Edit: I’m not going to remove the bit just above, as everybody’s already seen it anyway, but on reflection I do think it was a poor choice of words so please accept my apologies if you or anyone else thought I was being rude. I did not intend to be rude and was instead trying to gently make the point, in jest, that even though I recognise this is a strange topic it is one of interest to me and some others

Indeed, and all of these brands are under the RBS license.

Actually I find it somewhat interesting, though maybe the thread title is wrong if it’s only about this one account code.

Anyway, I do remember selecting the sort code a while back (though no more), I may have to try this firm (no harm in a second account).

Interesting one I did notice is that it uses the same sort code for all accounts by default. I had closed my rbs account a while ago and reopened it not that long ago (couple of years) and it picked up my old sort code by default. Still a main branch

Is the physical card similar in build to the Normal rbs and NatWest ones?

A lot of reading, but the thread has discussed a number of RBS’ accounts though Child & Co has been discussed in some detail.

Yes, it seems you get allocated a “default sort code” when you first open an account.

The card is printed like all usual RBS ones.

The thread is also about Drummonds and Holt’s, but they seem to have attracted less interest so far.

Yes same design with the printed numbers too

I quite like the quality of the rbs cards, though I’d love for them to put the number on the back like they did with the Bo card

I’d like it to be embossed, though.

I don’t miss my embossed cards. They made imprints in my wallets

Child & Co probably attracted the most attention because it’s the only one that seems to come with a unique card. Especially now we have a clear way to sign up for one.

As @seb mentioned earlier, although there’s certainly enough discussion to warrant its own thread, hiding it within a more generalised thread will help mitigate the risk of the open secret becoming too open and prompting RBS to close it.

On the topic of this though, now that Holts has it’s own branded card, I wonder if it’ll be possible to get one of those too?

They used to do it in the old days, but ever since all the group cards have been made flat Child & Co cards have been too.

I think the design worked better when they were embossed and they used to be more sturdy, so it’s a bit of a shame.

Aren’t they aimed at military personnel (and another similar demographic which currently evades me)?

You have to phone up for a Holts account as you need a Ministry of Defence ID Card I believe

I think it probably is, but I have decided against it myself.

I just don’t think it’s right to “exploit” something that is supposed to be for military personnel.

Also, if you look at the actual Holt’s website, their application includes things like rank and posting, so it would probably be picked up if you tried to apply unofficially.

I’m mostly here for the Apple Pay design. If the RBS app winds up being as decent as it looks, they may end up playing a larger role in my financial life too. We have branches here, which is handy, so could be a good traditional account to hold as a backup plan.

I’ve never liked it much, the ink always wears off and they become difficult to read. My rbs card has held up really really well so far

If you want to get a holts account you can use

It’s never changed as far as I know but last I checked if you don’t provide active service details plus a photo of your Army ID number then you will get booted to a select account :slightly_smiling_face:
