Starling - general thread

Phew !
I read that as “I’m an Android” :flushed:

Dan’s seen things you people wouldn’t believe…

Just to throw a spanner in the works there, mine appeared after an app update, and I’m on Android…

Same. Z Fold3.

So I asked CS directly whether the open banking API supports transactions in Spaces. Apparently, it now does, but it’s up to third-party developers to update their systems.

Even once that has happened, I imagine you’d need to reconnect/resync the accounts before anything shows up

I didn’t know Starling have their own card processor now. I guess days of 3rd party outages are now a really old story.

What’s peoples opinions on starling nowadays

They’ve dropped the ball a tad. Not impressed with their lack of caring about merchant enrichment now paired with their reluctant to raise rates but speed to drop them.

I’m using them as my main account after leaving it dormant for around 18 months. Pretty impressed - it does everything that I need with any fuss.

I’m not concerned about interest rates as I always shop around for the best deal.

Thanks not bothered on rates. Shame about the merchant info enrichment. But tempted to use again s can drop Monzo plus for virtual cards.

I’m indifferent. I never liked it enough to use it properly, but I never really disliked it either. I found the interface too complicated and cluttered (could never find what I was looking for, or where to go to find something, worse than Monzo in this regard for me).

Starling is a bit like windows. It’s just not designed for me, and I found it frustrating to use as a result.

In the end it became fodder for a switching bribe as I started to become eligible for them again. So that’s what I did when RBS put their offer up. Switch it to them for £175.

I think they’re great to be honest. In terms of normal everyday banking I have no issues. I use them for my main account (joint) and my business account.

I don’t need the budgeting or insights etc. but appreciate other people may.

I have my bills coming from a space and that works great and it’s just easy for me.

I did use Starling as my main personal spend account until Chase came along. I still have my salary and pension paid into Starling, but that’s pretty much it. The App itself is perfectly functional but I genuinely prefer the Chase App as I find it easier to use. I couldn’t care less about the budgeting tools or Spaces because I have absolutely no need for them. Starling is now the only online account I have that caters for cheques, not that I’ve received a cheque since 2020.

I’ve been using Starling since November 2017, and exclusively for my banking since May 2018. I still find it head and shoulders above the competition. There isn’t anything I need that I can’t do with Starling - I recently was able to drop Revolut as I only used it for virtual cards.

We opened a Starling account purely as a separate account to use for travel, and for that, it suits us (almost) perfectly.
Like others have said, we don’t need any fancy bells and whistles, so the simplicity of Starling is ideal.

Folks use this to describe Starling a lot, but personally don’t get it. What is it about their approach that resembles simplicity?

From my experience, it was the total opposite.

Possibly the simplicity (for us at least) comes from how we use it.

  • Main account - Holiday spending money

  • Space 1 - Weekly savings towards the cost of our travels

  • Space 2 - Holds the funds ready to pay the credit card bill when it’s due.

  • Connected Card Space - sits there as a back up in case we ever lose use of the main card.

We don’t use any of the budgeting tools, nor do we have the need for detailed merchant data, the instant notifications are more than enough for us.
The huge pie chart on the home screen that many complain about, we just ignore.

Hope this explains things a little better.

Ah okay! That makes sense, thank you! :relaxed:

Had been using Starling as my spending account since 2020. Never had any problems and found it much less clustered and straightforward to use. Customer service was also great whenever I had to use it.

After 3 years use and their release of virtual cards, I felt it was time to give it a go as my main account. Cass’ed over both my personal.account and our joint account from Santander last month. . Again no problems with either switch and have no regrets so far. Wife is now tempted to cass over her personal account from Barclays.

Apart from replacing the Pulse landing page, I’ve really no complaints about the app or customer service.

Thanks slowly moving stuff from Monzo to starling as don’t have to pay £5 a month for virtual cards.
