Starling - general thread

Android. I’ve never had an iPhone in my life.

It would be nicer if they spent time on allowing automatic transfers to their savings account instead but I have a feeling that’s never coming.

Ok. I’ve just updated my Android phone (I’ve got one of each) and I’m blowed if I’m seeing anything different.

Can you do a selective screenshot which shows the new Home Screen?

I say new home screen. All they’ve done is change the colour at the top and changed how the menu option looks a bit.

Graham: I’m seeing the exact same change as Ryan on Android, app version 3.88.0.111926…

Aha, yes. I’ve had that on the iOS phone for a little while.

Sounds like they’ve done a copy and paste job of a preset update notification without checking that it’s still applicable.

Look at the previous notes and you’ll see they don’t always pertain to any actual changes in that release.

Absolutely :relieved:.

I’ve dropped them a message and Sandra has come back and said someone will now get a slap for dropping the ball.

(Incidentally, I really do wish the wordsmith on the Android dev team would have a day off. The attempts at colourful picturesque descriptions of what’s coming with the app update are mind-boggling.)

Remember when they said they’d make meaningful app update notes only to abandon it after a few months

Podcast with Jason Maude from Starling if anyone’s interested.

The secret to building banks that won’t break.

I don’t normally bother with such, but took a look anyway (as a prime Starling customer).

Although the interviewer’s enthusiasm had him talking rather too much, the chap from Starling was interesting, particularly around the issue of frequent v rare software releases. That all made abundant sense.

I want to see Starling’s financials to see how all this drama lately has actually affected them.

I have never seen this low balance warning feature before. Still no improvements to the easy saver. They really don’t want to do anything to encourage anyone to use it :joy:

You would think being able to set up an automatic transfer would be the first thing on their list. Apparently not.

It seems like starling have completely stalled recently?

Can open new accounts, people can open the half baked saver, no credit card they mentioned they were working on. Just big fixes …

It’s nice and reliable otherwise

I get what you mean - the credit card would have been nice due to the way they could have integrated it into the Starling app, and the Easy Saver has been a bit of a fiasco. No idea why they don’t allow automatic transfers, plus it means my 40 or so pots now no longer earn interest, which is annoying!

That said, overall I’ve still very happy with Starling. All the features you need in a bank account, plus extras like virtual cards, all with no fees. And, they haven’t been subject to any of the outages that many of the other big banks have been experiencing.

What are the key features you would like to see them add?

Yep. It sounds boring, but with all the basics delivered consistently well, I’m happy to trust them with my day to day banking.

I’ve never felt particularly fussed that they haven’t introduced a credit card. Always had that feeling it wouldn’t happen with Starling.

I’ve recently got into the virtual card thing. I get its value now.

The integrated euro account is a triumph in its simplicity. A great feature.

New features?
Can’t think of a thing. I certainly don’t want them to inflate the app with loads of flab and “tools”.

I too, am happy with my Starling account.

I use the free virtual cards regularly.

The ability to schedule transfers into the Easy Saver would be preferable though.

I’d be interested in a credit card offering but don’t know whether I’d bother applying for it (which is exactly how I felt about the Chase offering).

I would apply for an overdraft if they offered me one.

Otherwise, I agree with the sentiment that it’s a fairly mature and well featured current account offering.

Interestingly, we have a business Euro account with them, but we haven’t used it in a little while.

Now, it’s only £2 per month and we had a good use out of it when working with a client in Ireland. But Starling emailed me to say “you haven’t used it in sometime, you can cancel it if needed”.

I asked them about it and the logistics of it, and apparently I can close it, but won’t be able to reopen it because they’re not accepting new applications for it.

Bit annoying, but tempted to ditch it and stick to just the GBP account (I think that can receive non-GBP payments?)
