Tymit - Who uses it? What do you think?

Any good alternatives?

Personally, I don’t think it’s much better/worse than any other mainstream card.
I’d use something like MSE Credit Club to see which cards I’m most likely to get and go from there. Possibly avoiding Barclaycard…

Maybe the case, but I want to avoid opening another traditional credit card with high APRs,

I’m shifting towards bnpl apps instead as 3 months is more than enough to make full payment for me.

I’ve chosen Tymit as they offer a credit card instead of the usual debit card unlike other such as Zilch, ClearPay, Laybuy etc.

I hear credit card lenders are also introducing their own bnpl offerings (Virgin Money Slyce etc…), but I don’t really trust them with hidden, late fees, high interests as such, that have a negative impact on your credit report.

Fees charged/paid have no impact on your credit record. Nor does interest charged.

Evidence of BNPL products is thought to be seen by some lenders as a negative.

I’m curious if Tymit actually make money?

Monzo lose money when people spread payments over three months so presumably it’s the same for Tymit unless most of their customers spread payments over longer periods. You just never hear anything from Tymit to know what is going on.

They’ll make an absolutely tiny bit of comission from the interchange revenue their card network provides (which is capped at 0.3% in the UK). If you pay in full before any interest becomes chargeable, you are probably not making them any money once you factor in the costs associated with administering your account (support, backend, card issuance etc).

What happened to the Tymit community? Have they just deleted it or is it just down

Looks like Plum is gone as well.

Last I heard it was being shut down

Sounds as if Tymit have just killed their USP

From Wednesday 19th of July, 2023, we’ll be making some changes to how 3-month plans work.

We will be removing the 0% feature on 3 month instalment plan and begin charging interest at your standard rate for all new purchases you put into this plan from this date. You will also be charged your standard rate for any existing purchases you re-plan to 3-months from Wednesday 19th of July, 2023.

Please be aware that any purchases you have already planned into 3-monthly instalments are not impacted by this change and will still be interest-free. You can also amend any unplanned purchases to a 3-month plan up until Wednesday 19th of July, 2023 without being charged interest

This will not affect any other existing instalment plans you already have in place.

Hmm - I meant to choose the shocked face emoticon but there doesn’t appear to be a way to change it now.

Having stood in front of a mirror and thought of Tymit, that should be acceptable

Why are they not accepting new customers as well? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

I made ( a complete assumption) that they are in wind-down/future sustaining mode. Their last investment was for £23m back in Oct 2022 which was a down round after their previous £30m round in Feb that year.

So my guess is that the VC money is drying up and they will either go under or make it through with a lower user base and then grow again over time. I doubt it though.

Tymit is great example of a poor implemetation of a good-ish idea.
3 months interst free was the only reason left for me to keep persisting with them, with that now gone, I think it’s time to close this one for me.

I think the fact they’ve given us a whole three days of notice for such a big change, and the email being completely bland - no attempt at damage limitation, suggest they’re going down the plughole fast now.

It’s a month. 19th July. So a window if you have any big purchases to make that you’d like to spread over three months…

I get this every time I try and view my pin now :person_shrugging:

Just checked this and it’s same for me. (Pixel 7 pro)

Good choice, I have the same phone!

I’m trying to send them a message with that screenshot but it’s saying I need to allow permissions. No permissions are denied. App is a mess :person_shrugging:
