Algbra

I did ask way back when they launched, and I think I shared it somewhere (either on here or Monzo) but I don’t remember. I think it was either Modulr, clearbank or both.

Edit: it’s clear bank. Just clear bank. They use Modulr too, but I believe they’re just a processor. Clear bank is where deposits are safeguarded.

Same as Chip then

Bah I’m having no joy at all trying to sign up. ISTR this was a problem before.

The magic links they send don’t work most of the time - they just show a QR code which when scanned takes you to the exact same page. On the odd occasion they do work the ID checking bins out. Takes me to a chat window which I seemingly can’t get back to.

I’m persevering as 1.5% cashback is too good to ignore but close to throwing in the towel.

Update - for anyone on a Samsung Fold or similar - try using the small screen. I can’t fathom why it makes a difference but it did for me.

if you just get qr code, clear cache and data for app then try magic link again, worked for me

Have you had any (non google/apple pay) purchases get 1.5% cashback?

I joined at the weekend and my first purchase has received 1% cashback.

In the app under rewards I can see 1.5% for google/apple pay only and 1% for purchases with the card.

Is this based on their “The Formula” newsletter?

If so, I think you may have misread it.

The 1.5% applies to transactions via Apple/Google Pay only which had been the case for a little while. Those made by card still get 1% cashback.

That’s the way it reads to me too.

Card 1%
Digital wallet 1.5%

Pretty clearly TBF too :+1:

The misinterpretation, though, could appear if one does not click the Learn More, however, even then, the email says “up to”.

I received an email on 21st July 23 stating that the latest referral offer has now ended, until they perhaps initiate a new offer.

So thanks to another marvellous individual, I got my free tenner, they got their tenner and I actually quite like using Algbra for little everyday spends :+1:

It’s one of the nicest apps out there. Bring me open banking connection and it may become the day to day spender.

Leading on from the ‘main account’ thread, I’m in the same mind frame, until Algbra become a fully licensed bank, it’s a spend only account. I’d like to see Algbra in the same league as Starling or Chase, but I suspect it’s a long way off.

I am surprised though that the Algbra debit card isn’t being trumpeted as a go too spending card abroad with their no fees and near perfect MasterCard rate.

The way I use it is my spending money goes to Kroo after bills, then I move it over to Algbra as & when. I’ve considered doing a standing order but sometimes I have to top it up. I’ve had to use the Kroo card once or twice when I’ve had no signal lol. What I perhaps should start doing is using one cashback card for one type or spend and one for another. But that’s for another day…

Because Monzo did that and all it meant was that they lagged on deposits when they became a bank?

To be fair, I know bog all about Monzo except the stuff I read on their forum. I’d say I was probably demographically unsuitable for a Monzo account

I reckon the fact that cashback scheme had a lot of teething problems is part of the problem.

That & MSE never seem to push e-money products…

I’m older than you and I have had a Monzo account since the prepaid debit card days of 2017, so it’s nothing to do with demographic tbf.

Me too. I would love them (but I don’t think it will happen) to do this. I used the card abroad on my last trip after the shenanigans of the HSBC Global Money “fee free” card in Greece (It was VERY unreliable) and Algbra worked perfectly first time every time.

But I don’t trust e-money and they don’t connect into Open Banking. One to watch over time I think.

For the avoidance of doubt, Algbra have no plans to become a bank. Though they know it’s something some customers would like to see happen.

I am those customers. It’s a great proposition, and one of the nicest app’s out there for banking (in terms of simplicity)

Not sure of the significance in banking terms, but I got this today……
