Jaja 2.0

I used it yesterday expecting to see it. Had the notification, tapped it, and it just showed me a list of transactions.

Better luck next time…? :man_shrugging:

Interesting tie up. With apparently so many families on the bones of their backsides finance wise in these utterly depressing times, I’m sure they’ll be plenty of interest from the masses familiar with the household name credit card provider JaJa, to acquire an Asda branded credit card. Good luck to 'em I say.

Asda used to offer two cashback credit cards which I think were quite popular but the contract with Creation ended back in 2020.

Wasnt there a partnership previously with Asda and Jaja?

I know you meant this as a joke, but Asda aren’t their first partnership. They provide some Post Office credit cards and an AA credit card, as part of the package they acquired from Bank of Ireland.

Yes. And I think you’re thinking of jajapay. No idea if it’s still going. It was whitelabel - sounds like the credit card won’t be (?)

that’s the one

You know this and I know this, but I can with probably some degree of certainty guess, that if you asked the average person on the street if they’d ever even heard of ‘JaJa’, a lot would probably look at you a bit daft. I don’t think they are in any way a household name, maybe in Londonium and some other major cities perhaps.

I know!

The somewhat silly name doesn’t help either.

It was a sort of installment/flexible payment plan trial with George.

I believe they decided to concentrate on cards, probably sensible given the number of other firms in that market!

I agree Jaja are not a household name but they don’t need to be.

How many customers using a branded card actually look/care at who the underlying issuer is? (Perhaps with the exception of some Amex cards)

It only tends to be an issue when that contract ends - such as Amazon’s contract with Newday

Exactly, it’s actually a sign of our banking interest that we even realise different banks provide the cards on behalf of retailers.

I bet if you asked someone with an Amazon card what credit card they had they would say, 9 times out of 10, that it was “an Amazon card”. Then if you said “yes, but who is the issuer” they would look at you blankly and say again “Amazon, it’s an Amazon card”. They would have no awareness of NewDay at all.

Equally, this is why banks want to be in partnership with successful retailers in the first place - it drives customers to get their card so they can earn money off them. It doesn’t matter to the banking brand that nobody knows who they are: they don’t need to.

Expectations are low for this one, but could be worth a look.

Worth noting that Asda give 3% cashback to Ode/Spree card holders so this should be viable for them in their own stores… but given the premium/annual fee Creation card only gave 2% back at Asda, who knows.

The real story I expect will be the ‘everywhere else’ rate. The Avios free Barclaycard works out as 0.8% if you convert out to Nectar points, that’s going to be pretty tough to beat. 1% would make it a no brainer for anyone who shops at Asda, even occasionally.

ASDA Pounds. Really, they couldn’t think of a better name for their points?

The idea is that they’re not “points” they’re pounds. Asda are trying to avoid the complexity of “Nectar points” not being worth anything understandable in real terms (without some meme conversion they do to show you).

How very strange that you can only spend your ‘Asda pounds’ in some asdas, not all of them.

Otherwise a pretty good deal, if you shop regularly at Asda and live near a participating store.

They’re rolling out Asda Rewards. It started out as a trial in the West Midlands, and subsequently has been rolled out in some stores in Yorkshire and the North East. I guess we can presume it is no longer a trial given the credit product based on it.

Very disappointed in this.

1% back as store credit in their own stores is derisory when they can offer 3% back through Spree/Ode. Even the introductory offer of 2% is poor.

0.3% as the ‘elsewhere’ rate is only just shy of the bottom of the cashback/rewards market.

I thought there was perhaps an opportunity for Asda/Jaja to do something a bit bold but apparently not.
