I am thinking if having two, then switch out the first (fee free) one to Nationwide
I think starling is probably my last choice for a switching account - they make it quite hard to open new accounts!
If you have an account elsewhere already, I’d look there. Maybe even open a new account. You have to be a bit careful with credit checks though…
I am new to Starling so it is not much of a big deal in case they decide to throw me out. Credit checks are not a problem for now as I am not planning to take any serious credit product soon. So checks for current accounts are okay.
Starling is very useful for closing old accounts elsewhere, which you may want if you’re on the switching bandwagon. Their CASS process is the best, in my experience.
I don’t think they’ll let you play the multi-account game very readily though. Santander, Nationwide, Halifax etc etc would do what you want very easily. Open a second account and just switch it
Due to some reasons I am aware of, Halifax and Lloyds won’t let me open new accounts on top of the already existing ones until I sort it out. I do not currently have any account with Santander.
So are you just looking for the switch bonus cash or are you looking to tidy up other existing accounts?
Isn’t it a year, not six months?
Unfortunately, your experiment won’t work. As Pootle points out, above, I was wrong about the additional/secondary account as it’s linked to your first/main account and you can’t CASS into or out of it.
If you CASS the first account out then the second one will be closed too.
It says on their website:
“Please note, there are some features available on your first main GBP account which are not available:
Personal overdrafts
In-credit interest
Switching in or out (CASS)”
I’m not aware of this restriction with any other bank. Usually, additional current accounts are separate from the first one and I’ve successfully used CASS to switch second, or third, current accounts away from Nationwide, Halifax, Lloyds, and TSB.
This was my point earlier. I don’t think it’s an additional current account in the truest sense, unlike the high street banks. It’s a separate account to your main one but it shares the same debit card. Behind the scenes, the two accounts are linked.
I’ll wager a tenner that if you CASS away your Starling account, they’ll close your additional account.
Question. Can you open multiple joint accounts with Starling?! Otherwise, I’ll ask
I’d put money on the answer being no
I’m pretty sure you can’t - 99.9% certain!
Ah thanks, you found it! Seems like a silly limitation to me.
Do other banks allow it? Maybe I just haven’t tried but then again, why would I need more than one?
Must admit, I’ve never thought of it as a thing. Might it be a second joint with same other person or a different other?
I’ve had two concurrent joint accounts at natwest (with different co-account holders). Joint accounts can be useful for so many things (shared care of relatives, significant others, children who are young adults etc), having multiple in one place is handy. It would be nice if banks had a standard form for purpose and closure as well to really tie the whole thing up
Good examples - makes sense when you put it that way. ![]()
I know someone who has a JA with his wife and his elderly mother. It’s with HSBC.
