The card design thread

Is that new on Android?

On iOS It’s a white snowy scene with a tree, and has been for a while.

It used to be a white snowy tree but they changed it a while back

It’s split across 2 images, but you can see it in their play store images.

It looks reminiscent of HSBC Connected Money (beta) which also used a giant HSBC logo as the splash screen.

Very unimaginative, I much prefer the tree!

My guess for this is the different market. Chip and pin usage is very common here, and afaik we’re the hub of vertical cards. Vertical cards make less sense in countries that rely more on the mag strip.

Yuck! Put it underneath!

Not a mock-up! A friend of mine just got one. The Interac (Canadian debit system) logo is on the back.

Nice!

More bank cards need to start doing that.

If I ran HSBC I’d be pissed off that the logo – my most important brand asset – was under a bloody chip. The usable space should exclude the chip area.

That design should not have passed the design team checks. Simply put. Its awful

Aside from that, and the logo being plastered on the front twice, I don’t like how one version has white triangles, and the other transparent. At least have your branding consistent!

Also, I need to know, because I think I’m seeing a shimmer of red coming from under the chip, but does the card have a red core with red edges? That would be a nice touch.

All of my recent HSBC cards have had a red core, I’d expect that to continue as part of the branding (red logo)

Mine only has a black core :frowning:
What type of account do you need for a red core?

After double-checking, I stand corrected on this one. My (just-expired-and-binned) Advance Debit card definitely had a red core, but the new, recent replacement has a black core.
My Gold Credit card has the red core. Here are the current card edges:

(no idea what the Pixel Portrait mode was thinking when processing the top rounded corners!)

I just have the HSBC Bank Account (the grey and red one). It would look really cool with a red core for sure

Noticed a new Visa hologram on my replacement Lloyds debit card:

No background, a much higher resolution and I’m impressed at how much colour they’ve managed to get out of the iridescence - in the first photo it genuinely looks like a coloured sticker. It does now really look like a pigeon though, and I believe it’s supposed to be a dove?

Is this a change that’s being rolled out to all new Visa cards?

It’s a pigeon?! Was my first thought seeing that too! Looks better though.

Pigeon Bank ???

My Starling card was near expiry so they sent a new card. New one has ‘world debit’ on it.

Not sure if there’s any difference through…

The contactless symbol has been moved to the front of the card too.

It will look like a pigeon, because there’s no official difference between a pigeon and a dove:

“the truth of the matter is that “dove” and “pigeon” are both interchangeable names that can be applied to any of the Columbidae species. There’s no official differences between the two.”
